Hot Air Balloons Rising Over Boulder County Open Space

Twin Lakes Open Space is just a short walk from my house. Someone in my family is over there almost every day. It is a great place to walk the dog or take a run. It is also the place where hot air balloons take off each morning. This morning, instead of taking a run, I decided to go over and take some photos and video. This video was taken from the SW shore of the west lake. The west lake is fenced and dogs are allowed to be off leash, a luxury in the Boulder area.  I hope you enjoy the beautiful morning as much as I did.

Students Arrive Back in Boulder

The roads fill up with cars; the restaurants are filled with doting parents; Target and Bed Bath and Beyond are filled with dorm room customizers.  It’s that time of year again – the students are back!

Living in a college town is great. The mood is definitely upbeat and the activities have a slant toward the fun and active.  The latest figures on CU’s website state that the University of Colorado has just under 30,000.  The influx of students definitely makes an impact on how our fair city feels.  Not only are students a big part of the daily life in town, they are a huge part of the local economy.  From a real estate perspective, they fill rentals and their parents buy condos and houses for them to live in.

The University is also the city’s largest employer. This gives us a strong keel with which we are able to withstand many economic ups-and -downs very well.

Another big perk we get by living in a college town are the sporting and cultural events.  Soon, Saturday afternoons will be filled with the sounds of Football.

Welcome Back!

The North Boulder Criterium

The annual North Boulder Criterium was held on Sunday.  The event featured races throughout the day.  Some of the best moments were from the little tikes races.  Here are a few images from the day.  A great event for a bike crazy town.

Forbes Names Boulder The #1 Place to Live Well

I know it and chances are that if you are reading this you know it too; Boulder is a great place to live!  Every year Boulder gets ranked by a magazine for things like; Best Places to Start a Company, U.S. Healthiest Cities, Most Educated Cities and other such rankings.  This year we top the list in a cumulative ranking of sorts – Best Places to Live Well.

According to the story on Forbes.com “Characteristics like the number of museums, parks, bars and restaurants, and cultural institutions per capita were considered, as were factors indicative of a favorable business environment. These include patents, venture capital funding, sole-proprietorships, start-ups and small businesses per capita.”

Having these types of rankings helps our overall economy by attracting companies, well qualified professionals and individuals who have a choice on places to live.  Keep up the good work Forbes.

Walk at Sawhill Ponds

This morning was a beautiful morning and to celebrate, I took a camera walk at Sawhill Ponds.  The ponds are an open space area owned by Boulder County which used to be a gravel quarry.  It’s a popular spot to walk, birdwatch or fish and I’m lucky to live just a few minutes away.  Here are a few shots from my walk, too bad I didn’t have a microphone as the birds voices were quite animated.

To view a shot of a goose egg after a run-in with a fox go to my Image-of-the-Week.

Sawhill Ponds and the adjacent Walden Ponds are located off of 75th Street, between Jay Rd. and Valmont Rd, about 5 miles east of Boulder.
